WHY DOES A WATER HEATER FAIL? WHAT ARE THE LIKELY CAUSES?

Residential water heater failures can occur due to various reasons, ranging from normal wear and tear to more serious issues. Some common reasons for water heater failure include:

  • Sediment buildup: Over time, minerals and sediment can accumulate at the bottom of the tank, causing corrosion and reducing heating efficiency.

  • Corrosion: Corrosion can occur both inside and outside the tank, leading to leaks and eventual failure of the water heater.

  • Heating element failure: Electric water heaters have heating elements that can burn out or malfunction, resulting in a lack of hot water.

  • Thermostat issues: Faulty thermostats can cause the water heater to overheat or not heat the water to the desired temperature.

  • Pressure relief valve problems: If the pressure relief valve malfunctions, it can lead to excessive pressure buildup in the tank, which may result in leaks or even tank rupture.

  • Leaking tank: Corrosion or cracks in the tank can cause water to leak out, leading to water damage and eventual failure of the water heater.

  • Gas valve problems: Gas water heaters rely on a gas valve to control the flow of gas to the burner. Malfunctioning gas valves can lead to issues with heating and may pose safety risks.

DO I HAVE TO REPLACE MY WATER HEATER, OR CAN IT BE REPAIRED?

No one really wants to replace their water heater, but sometimes there is no other way around it.   Most people are not aware of all the conditions or challenges that a water heater faces, and particullay which situations require a new water heater, or potentially some maintenance or repair.

In every case, repair or replacement options for water heater issues depend on the severity of the problem:

  • Sediment buildup: Flushing the tank to remove sediment buildup can improve heating efficiency. In severe cases, the heating element may need to be replaced.

  • Corrosion: If corrosion is localized, it may be possible to repair the affected area. However, extensive corrosion often necessitates replacing the water heater.

  • Heating element failure: Faulty heating elements can usually be replaced relatively easily by a technician.

  • Thermostat issues: Thermostats can often be recalibrated or replaced if they are not functioning properly.

  • Pressure relief valve problems: If the pressure relief valve is faulty, it should be replaced promptly to prevent potential safety hazards.

  • Leaking tank: In some cases, a leaking tank may be repairable with a patch or sealant. However, if the tank is extensively corroded or damaged, it will likely need to be replaced.

  • Gas valve problems: Faulty gas valves should be replaced by a qualified technician to ensure proper operation and safety.

  • Regular maintenance, such as flushing the tank and inspecting for signs of corrosion or leaks, can help prevent water heater failures and prolong the lifespan of the appliance.
