Sewer and septic lines are one of the most important features of a person's home.
A properly running sewer not only protects your water quality, but did you know that it also protects one's own health?
The sewer line has water that travels through these pipes when your toilets are flushed or when any water in the home is being used.
Most sewer lines can function for years without any cause for concern when properly maintained, but problems can arise when the sewer lines are not functioning correctly. If you ever notice that you have multiple drains not draining, your drains are making a gurgling sounds, drains are draining much slower than usual, or a sewer backup in your basement, lawn, or driveway then this typically means there is a backup somewhere in your main sewer line.
There are many different variables that can cause a sewer issue. These variables can include broken, crushed, or damaged pipes, root invasion and improperly discarded waste.
Over time, pipes can burst, corrode, break down, and disconnect as the ground shifts.
Trees and shrubs require oxygen and water to grow. Your sewer line is an excellent source of oxygen and water. Plant roots will go in search of a water source anywhere underground to continue to grow. Once the plant's roots get into the sewer line, it provides the roots with enough nutrients to keep growing. These roots can cause a blockage to form if not maintained properly and if left untreated, these roots can cause the pipe to burst completely.
Another variable that can cause a blockage is flushing unflushables. Unflushables can consist of diapers, napkins, tampons, paper towels, and anything else that really should not go down your pipes. It is important to never flush garbage that can be disposed of in another way. Also, not to pour any fat and grease down the drain as this can cause a blockage.
Properly taking care of your home's plumbing, inside and outside, can prolong the use of these lines and keep your costs down in the long run.
